COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Want to make a movie but don’t have a script to start with? Struggling to finish a script that you’ve started? Have hundreds of snippets of ideas that just won’t come together? This 4-session course, given by an award-winning filmmaker and experienced educator, will introduce participants to the genre of short film and offer practical writing advice to best serve it. Some of the topics we’ll consider:
picking a good subject and defining its scope
how to explore and develop your ideas
giving elegance to exposition
how to apply ‘less is more’ thinking
learning to cut what you love
allowing theme to dawn on audiences (instead of bludgeon them!)
the important differences between playwrighting and screenwriting
how to motivate yourself to get started and get it done!
BIOGRAPHY:
Caitlin Murphy has written and directed two short films, Flushing Lacan (2010) and TOAST (2011), both of which won the Jury Prize at the Montreal ACTRA Short Film Festival. She is currently making a short documentary called Good Hands: the story of Copper’s Guitar and working on her first feature screenplay. Last year she started a buddy-system film-review blog, fruitsunheardof.blogspot.com, for which she has penned over 20 full-length critiques. Previously, her work focused on the stage: she has written dramatic plays, sketch comedy, one-woman shows, and stand-up. Caitlin has a Master’s Degree in English Literature and almost a decade of teaching experience.
