Location: La Cenne, 7755 boul. Saint-Laurent, suite 300, Montreal

Frank Soehnle founded Figuren Theater Tübingen in 1991 as a freelanced company of contemporary puppet theatre for adults. Each production involves different art forms and creates a special theatrical language. The combination of material and movement is always the base of their artistic work – the puppet always the center of the artistic research. Different artists from all spheres of art are involved in the process of creation. On this crossroad of arts, performances like Flamingo Bar, Nachtgesichter, Children of the Beast, With huge wings, salto.lamento and Hôtel de Rive were created and toured the world.

“The moment of impulse”

The masterclass focuses on the relation and impulse work between puppet and puppeteer, material and performer, object and subject and all possibilities of transformation.

“The moment of impulse” between a human being and a puppet can open a new sphere of theatrical possibilities.  By discovering the options of the material you are working with and connecting it with the realistic and abstract possibilities of the human body, you will find a new, more open view to your work.

Different manipulation techniques and materials will be explored under their range of theatrical expression. Participants will learn how to take the impulse from the material/puppet to move into another reality.

“strings in transit”

A special focus will be the relation between puppeteer and string puppets. Frank Soehnle, known for his exceptional work with string puppets, will work on contemporary methods of using and handling objects and puppets on strings in relation to the movements of the puppeteer.

Participants are asked to bring clothes in which they can move freely.

Besides that they should bring:

–          a long coat and a hat (should fit)

–          a puppet or object (no matter what technique)

–          a suitcase (no limits in size and form)

Frank Soehnle studied Puppet Theatre from 1983-87 at the national “Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst” (Academy of Music and Performing Arts) in Stuttgart (graduated as Master of Puppet Theatre). From 1987-90 he was artistic director of the Figurentheater Karlsruhe. In 1991 he founded the independent Figuren Theater Tübingen.

He is guest lecturer at the “Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst” and other international Universities and Academies.

He has performed in Australia, Asia, Canada, Europe, India, Israel, Mexico, Russia and the USA. He works as performer and puppeteer, puppet maker and director.

Workshop: A Physical Approach to Creative Writing

by QDF
This course is meant for writers of all kinds, actors, dancers, and spoken word artists, interested in working physically for the inspiration and creation of a personal text.  To leave space for all kinds of writing (poetry, fiction, spoken word, monologue and dialogue) we will work with various ways in: understanding intention and action, creating physical scores, character building, play, and movement-text analysis.  The course is experimental in the sense that its structure will mould with the needs and wants of the participants involved.
Participants should expect:
– to gain tools to approach the creation of text physically
– to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between words, punctuation and the body
– to develop a way of understanding and analyzing text physically
– to have a safe space with others to explore, risk, fail, and try again.

Workshop: PWM’s Exploring Practice: Script Analysis

by QDF
Every good play presents a strong argument, engages the audience in a dynamic dialogue, and tells a compelling story. But what are the elements that make up a great play? Knowing how to analyze a text helps develop a vision and a voice, a point of view. It expands the vocabulary that will support an informed discussion about the play with artistic collaborators. Text analysis reveals the questions (and not the answers) that the script holds, questions that lead to clear and strong understanding of the world of the play.
The objective of these sessions is to explore various tools required for a critical reading of a theatrical text. Through hands-on exercises, we will examine structure, character, ideas, language and staging, while investigating the importance of the social, political and historical context of works for the stage. Open to professional playwrights and dramaturgs at all stages of their practice.

Micheline Chevrier  For over thirty years, Micheline has worked across Canada as a director, artistic director and dramaturg. As a director, she has worked at such theatres as The Shaw Festival, the National Arts Centre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Canadian Stage, Young People’s Theatre, Centaur Theatre, Geordie Productions, and Theatre New Brunswick among others. Her directorial credits also include works by Molière, Coward, FO and Churchill, as well as several Canadian playwrights such as John Murrell, Wendy Lill, David Young and Ann-Marie Macdonald, just to name a few. She has also directed several plays in translation by several Quebec playwrights, including Michel Tremblay, Michel Marc Bouchard, and Carole Fréchette. Micheline was the Artistic Director of the Great Canadian Theatre Company in Ottawa, from 1995 to 2000. In July 2013, she was appointed the new Artistic and Executive Director of Imago Theatre. She has also directed and taught at the National Theatre School, Concordia University, McGill University, York University, Dalhousie University and University of Alberta among others.

Call to Participants: LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER

by QDF

If you could ask your mother one question about her life, what would it be? What is the most important thing a mother can pass on to her daughter?

Complicite Creative Learning and Why Not Theatre are making a show about Montreal’s Jewish women, and we’re looking for daughters and their mothers (or mothers and their daughters) who are interested in creating and performing in it.

We’re hoping to talk to people across the city about their experiences of being a woman and being Jewish, about their family traditions and how those feature in their lives, and about their most outrageous family stories. These stories will then be woven into a performance starring the mothers and daughters themselves.

No performance experience required – we’re looking for real people and real stories!

After initial meetings in March, we’re hoping to create and produce the project over a two week period in May 2014.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the project, and how to participate, please contact Poppy Keeling: poppy@complicite.org

The project will be created in association with Complicite, OFFTA and A Bit Off the Top.
