Auditions: Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre – Puppeteers, Tales from Odessa

by QDF

The Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre is looking for puppeteers for its upcoming production of “Tales from Odessa” based on the stories of  Isaac Babel.

The play, directed by Audrey Finkelstein , with music by Josh Dolgin, aka Socalled, will be performed at the Segal Theatre from June 16 to July 7.

Rehearsals take place in the evenings and on Sundays.

We are looking for students in theatre, dance, or movement arts who are interested in performing shadow puppetry. The performance will be physically demanding and diverse forms of manipulation will be used, including body shadows, the manipulation of shadow puppet cut-outs, as well as visible onstage manipulation. The shadow puppeteers will be performing as part of the ensemble, such that the shadow puppeteers are manipulators while being part of the onstage action wherever necessary.

Please send your cvs with a brief statement of intent outlining your puppetry experience and what interests you about the project.

Please send cvs directly aafinkelstein@hotmail.com

Each Student is to Cast, direct, Produce, design, and create an artistic style of their choice. And given 1 day for all tech and dress rehearsal and performance. For my scene – the very first scene in the play “The Ends of the Earth” by Morris Panich – I have decided to go with a puppet oriented scene. The puppets are a variety of styles, mainly hand and rod puppets. The Scene stars Frank -a man in his 40s. Set in no particular time or place.

Comments: Puppetry Skills/experience considered an asset, and we will be exploring the new puppets I will be creating. Rehearsals will take place at the NTS Building at 5030 St. Denis. Performance of the excercise will also take place in the same building on March 13th. Approximately 25-30 rehearsal hours in total. MUST be free March 13th all day.

Submission Instructions: Please Submit CV and headshots along with availability from now until the 13th of March to chris_wardell@live.com

Characters

(Lead) Frank Gender: Male Age: 20+
Frank is in his 40’s but because it’s puppetry I’m looking for a voice to go along with it. Anyone above 20 years old, maturer sounding. This will be a hand puppet with 2 operators. Lead with voice will control head and either arm. Many monologues.

(Supporting) Willie and Frank’s other arm Gender: M or F Age: 19+
Willie is an old lady who runs a small hotel in the middle of nowhere. Most likely a Hand and rod puppet. After the short few lines of dialogue , the actor will become Franks opposite hand. Great chance for some puppetry experience. Any age actor will work.

The infringement welcomes a variety of performances and cultural resistance: theatre troupes, players of all types, street activism, political drama, musicians, radical performances, visual artists, films, marginalized arts, spoken-word, puppet shows, disadvantaged groups, and anyone wishing to artistically infringe on the monoculture and corporate oppression that creeps into every corner of our lives.

For information on how artists can apply, please visit:

Workshop at Playwrights’ Workshop Montreal – Exploring Practice: Autobiographical Fictions

by QDF

Everyone has a story to tell. What is that story? In this workshop we’ll be looking at how to draw on our lives for playwriting. Playwright

Jonathan Garfinkel will lead writers through various exercises and journeys into themselves. In doing so we will be exploring how to decide what is theatrically interesting or dramatic.

The question inevitably arises: how much do we disguise in our writing? How close to the “truth” must we be? Does it even matter? ‘Autobiographical fictions’ is an exploration into truth, fiction and ourselves – and the selves we’d wished we’d be.

Jonathan Garfinkel is the author of a book of poetry and several plays, including The Trials of John Demjanjuk: A Holocaust Cabaret, and House of Many Tongues, which was nominated for a 2011 Governor General’s Award. His plays have been produced throughout Canada and Europe. Currently he is living in Montreal and teaching at NTS in the playwriting program. His newest play, Dust, co-written with Christopher Morris, is based on their travels to Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Petawawa military base. Dust will premiere this March at Alberta Theatre Projects

March 4 to 8, 2013.  From 4pm to 7pm

The workshop is offered free of charge to PWM members, 100$ for non-members.

Please send us your bio and a short letter telling us how this exploration will benefit you as a professional playwright.

Send applications to:emma@playwrights.ca    Subject: Exploring Practice   Deadline:  February 18, 2013
